O.K., here's what going to happen, I've got a rusty oil pan that is ozzing oil into the bilge, I thought about just smearing J.B. Weld all over the affected areas, but, knowing my luck, that type of patch would most likely fail with the engine runing at 4000 RPM, I've resigned myself to the fact that the engine has to come out, so here's what I think has to happen, pull the 4 front engine bolts, disconnect the fuel lines, undo the battery connections & store the battery, undo the exhaust hose couplings & slide them back, remove the upper/transmission unit from the out drive ( being carefull not to loose the shims )remove the old Bellows, and then remove the bolts that hold the tail end of the bellhousing, ( i've got one of those engine tilters, to be used with the hoist ) also unhook the throttle cable & that squarish electricial plug, and the seawater hose will need to be ubdone, and I'm assuming it should tilt on out, I'm planing to replace the bearings in the bellhousing ... because now it will be easy .... so any words of wisdom would really help me out, this is a 1983 AQ225D engine in a Bayliner CRX223 ( it's one of those Crapri models ... but it's paid for!!! ) did I miss anything?

once all accesories and mounts are dissconected its all fun from there.
a lot of those pans on chevy V8's were truck oil pans, you may save a few coins there.
other than that follow the service manual and have a ball.

Re: Volvo oilpan replacement

Here's what I've done do far, I pulled the top unit from the out drive, and to my suprise, the bellows was filled with oil,I'm assumming the seal that goes from the gear housing is bad, I guess the good news is there was no water in the oil, the othere issue that I'll need a expert advice on is the tail of the bell housing is pretty pitted, ( it looks like there were previous bellows failures,in what may be salt/brack water and was allowed to sit, I'm in the Houston,Tx area and I suspect the boat was in the bay or gulf, although I bought the boat in Austin, Tx, and was told " oh it never was out of Lake Travis", .... yea right!!! )You can look at the photos at http://photos.yahoo.com/jastacey@sbcglobal.net , the splines on the yoke on the u-joint looks to be good & the splines on the enginge shaft looks to be good, so my question is do I replace the bellhousing with that level of pitting on the tail end or could I use it further and deal with it later when I can find a used bellhousing, my next question is since the oil level was low, and I have no Idea how many times the boat was run with the bad seal and low oil in the out drive ( I only ran it once, and noticed that the u-joint were kinda noisey, which got me to this point of taking things apart ) what kind of damage can I expect to find? When I shift the unit in gear there is a little play when you work the u-joint hack & forth, well holding the splined shaft on th bottem, also there is some up & down play on that vertical shaft, is that normal? I plan on replacing the crosses in the u-joints with ones that have a grease fitting.

Sounds like you're really getting wound up in an old boat and an old motor/outdrive. You've gone from oil pan to house of horrors. For the oil pan, I would say cut a hole in the hull. Beats a complete engine teardown and removal. But reading further, I'd say re-power.

Re: Volvo oilpan replacement

There have been times that I really wanted to just haul it to the land fill ... but every time I go to the boat shows .... those prices make my project's cost seem like a bargan .. since I'm doing the work myself and getting great info off this board .. it's really kinda fun .. it really amazies me how some people just don't do preventive maintance to there boats .. basicly I'm playing catch-up on that issue and there ignorance has done some pretty costly damage ... as for the motor/outdrive ... small block GM ... tons of motors ... outdrive I've had the stuff from the boy's in black, I'll stick with the volvo, once it's set-up right ... it's a very durable system .. got my oil pan today and the bellhousing comes in next week .. then I'll pul the motor ... I'll post photos of the progress
