I recently purchased my first boat with an inboard motor in it. It's a 17' Centurion (1983) with a Volvo motor and outdrive in it. I would like to know the proper way to change the oil and what type of oil is recommended in running in this motor.

Thanks all!

Re: Volvo Oil Change

Welcome aboard!
I use a $9 drill pump from the hardware store. There should be a garden hose male thread on the top of the dipstick. Attach a short lenght of scrap garden hose with a female thread on each end to it and the pump, add a discharge to the pump and a gallon jug. Make sure you read the "in" and "out" markings on the pump as they are not obvious and drill direction must be "foward". Warm up the engine and once you start the pump you should be done in a few minutes.
I hate the vacuum style pumps as they can have too many adaptors in the hoses that all tend to leak.
Volvo recommeds single wt 30 synthetic oil (which only they sell) but the same engine blocks from Merc recommend multi wt oil/ I use a multi wt synthetic, many other are happy with years of using convential multi wts.
The volvo maunal does spec some multi wts but I don't recall the specs.
Get your correct engine manual asap.
Good luck!

Doesn't sound like to big of a deal. Do you usually drop the boat in the water to warm it up, or just use muffs on it? Where do you typically buy your oil from... the local marine I'm guessing? Any idea of how many quarts a typical 4-cyl takes? Gallon jug I'm guessing about 4 or so?

warm it up on muffs. I use napa for oil/filters. 4 cyl will take 4-5... depending on the oil pan its got on it.
Put 4 qts in it on land. Then float the boat and then fill up to the level on the dipstick. If you float it every time then you can never be wrong.

Re: Volvo Oil Change

It seemed I never got enough of the oil out through the dipstick pumps, I tried several. Then I designed a drainpan that sat under the oil pan, which I added a hose to, which I stuck through the bilge and drained into a jug. But then it was a hassle to undo the oil drain plug, which was down in the bilge and you couldn't see.

I found a hose at Overtons that solved all my problems. It threads into the drain plug hole, and you can stick the other end out the bilge hole, uncap the plug on the other end of the hose, and drain it easy as pie. You just leave it installed always, I zip tie it out of the way.

With this setup I do like to have the engine warmed up but it isn't critical.
