Hello everyone, I am new here.

I have a Volvo 5.7GSI(57FCPBYC) that will not start. Last weekend when I started the boat I turned the key and heard the fuel pump come on for a couple of seconds. I started the boat and ideled out to the lake, during that time the I heard a sound like the fuel pump and that sound would come on for about 30 seconds and go out then come back on. When I got to the lake I tried to advance throttle and the boat stalled. Tried to restart and the same thing would happen until eventually the boat would not turn over at all, just crank. I tried to bleed fuel pressure at the bleed port and had no pressure.

I am thinking fuel pump. My question how do you determine which fuel pump could possible be bad?

Re: Volvo not starting

It sounds to me like your low pressure pump is not operating all the time. IF the high pressure pump were to run for 30 seconds and stop, the engine would stop immediatly, with a low pressure pump stoppiing for a few seconds, the engine could run off the fuel in the VST (Vapor seperator tank)
Below is a link to the OEM service manual for your troubleshooting your TBI system.

To check out the system, you will need a pressure gauge for EFI systems.

In the manual, go to page 6-16 (Chart 4) and follow the tests to determine the problem exactly.

Re: Volvo not starting

Thanks for the fast reply.

Which pump is it that you hear when you turn the key to the first position?

I am thinking the pump is not working at all, as the engine does now is crank.

With the flame arrestor off, should I be seeing fuel coming out of the injectors when cranking?

After reading the service manual my questions have been answered.

BOTH pumps run when you turn the key on.
Had you read thru the diagnostics in the manual I posted a link to, it would have sent you to Chart A5 page 3 of 3 which describes electrical system of the pumps.
Do some testing before you start buying pumps. You will find they are VERY expensive.

Re: Volvo not starting

Are the Volvo pumps worth the extra money over the Sierra's?

It looks like the Sierra brand is up to $70 cheaper.

Or is it another case of you get what you pay for?

Re: Volvo not starting

A quick update.

I replaced the low pressure fuel pump and it started right up.

Thanks Don for all your help.
