Volvo Motor/Outdrive compatibility

Hey all--

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a place on the web, or good advice at the very least, on what 70s-80s 4banger Volvos will match up to what outdrives? Namely, I have an 89 Baretta 20 footer with an AQ131 and a 270 outdrive, I believe. I bought the boat with the motor disassembled, and am finding out that the motor has been hacked on pretty good, and appears to have a car head on it. Short of throwing good money after bad money, I have decided to just find a good running replacement motor to drop in. There are two I am looking at; one is a late 70s AC130, and the other is an 1989 130horse. I'm leaning toward the late 70s one, that guy said it runs real well; the 1989, that one apparently hasn't been run since this time last year, and has sat outside uncovered all winter, and most likely wasn't winterized. I actually am a mechanic, own my own shop, so the mechanics of it all I have no problem with; however, I'm a new boat owner, and don't know a whole lot about compatibility between different engines and outdrives. Please, any help would be appreciated, I'm feeling pretty lost on this, and I don't want to make an uninformed decision when buying a donor boat.

Thanks, Travis

Re: Volvo Motor/Outdrive compatibility

I would look for another aq131, or 151. If the used engine sat out it may still be alright since those engines use antifreeze in the block. The heads are the same as auto heads, but the cam is different. Just my opinion.:)

AQ130's are fine but its a different generation of motor and parts are expensive and harder to find.

BTW, AQ131's didn't come with 270 outdrives.
