1986 Volvo 130 4cyl with a 175 Volvo drive. Elec/Mech. tilt device, The old tilt unit stripped the gear out of it. I dont know why but it was that way when i got the boat. I have installed a new one.My question is, before i let the drive all the way down. When i put the drive down by hand before i installed the tilt unit it locked down, so i released the lock manually and lifted it back up. How is the locking device suppose to release to tilt the drive up with the tilt unit? I dont want to break the new one so i need to understand and check the operation of that locking device and function. thanks

Re: Volvo lock/tilt operation?

I'm pretty sure you have the 280 to DP-C manual link, so look at the adjustment procedures on page 127. It will give yo a good idea how things work on the lockdown, and what releases it and when.

Also, are you sure you had a stripped gear? Those tilt motors have a clutch in them. It's easy to push the drive down by hand or in the water anything over idle in forward gear will still push the drive down to the locking rod. They are designed that way.

I'll check that manual Don. I didn't see any type of clutch in there Don, It's a worm gear set up. The threads inside the gear where the shaft goes through where striped right out of the gear.
