I am trying to identify a marine flywheel that I have. It is a early 90's GM, I believe for a 5.7L, it is 13" in diameter and has 153 teeth. As far as I know Mercruiser flywheels are larger....is this possibly a V.P. ? The GM # is 366861N. Anyone have any Idea's ?

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

Have no idea what the GM number is, but both Volvo and Mercruiser and several others all use the same GM flywheels, it's not a marine specific part. It may be a 305 flywheel also, and putting the wrong flywheel on an engine can really cause some wild vibrations.

Had this sitting around the shop, it's in good shape and was going to put it up on ebay, just don't remember what it came off of. I do know that it is too small in diameter to fit an alpha 1<br />coupler.

A perfect example of why NOT to buy engine parts on ebay.<br /><br />You might call it a "Decoration" :D

I bet somewhere there is someone who is knowledgeable enough to know what this is. If they are familiar with it and care to invest the time, they can get a part worth $200 for $10.00, that may be somewhat more to them than a decoration.

According to the only site with that part # (a race tracks rule book) it is a "stock Chevy manual flywheel". That is all I know.

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

Maybe I can shed a little light on this.........<br /><br /> Basically , there are 2 Chevy Flywheels...........<br />The 12 3/4", 153 tooth, which uses the Straight across bolt pattern Starters......<br />And,<br />The 14", 168 tooth, which uses the Staggered bolt pattern Starters.........<br /><br />Now, it gets Alot more confusing......<br />Both Flywheels can be found in the Early(pre-86) Crankshaft bolt pattern.... 3 1/4" bolt pattern(two piece rear main seals)<br />And,<br />The Late model(post-86) Crankshaft bolt pattern.... 3" bolt pattern(one piece rear main seal)<br /><br />And,<br />Both Flywheels can be found in Internally Balance configurations(Most Chevy motors)......<br />And, Externally Balanced configurations(400cid,SBC,+ 454cid, BBC, Yes, these flywheels Are interchangeable)......<br /><br />And,<br />Even though the 4.3l uses the same two diameters, in the same two bolt patterns,<br />The 4.3l has it's own balance problems... <br />So, it's balanced for the 4.3l Only........ And, due to the Many different 4.3l configurations, they Should Not be swapped, without a New Balance Job.......<br />Even through it's Known As a Neutral Balance Flywheel...........<br /><br />So,<br />A Flywheel from a 305, or a 350 will be a direct interchange part........<br />Actually, a Flywheel from a 2.5l, or a 3.0l, or a 305, or a 350 will All be a direct interchange part, Depending on the Starter Bolt Pattern......<br />Except that the Final Fine Balancing is done for the Particular motor that it's to be bolted onto.........<br />This is why a Balance Job Should be Mandatory for Every Engine Overhaul............<br /><br />BTW,<br />Alpha's, Bravo's, OMC's, Volvo's, etc. All use Both the 12",+ the 14" flywheels............<br />It Depends on Which Starter is used.............<br /><br />So,<br />If the flywheel you have is what you say it is,<br />It's a 153 tooth Chevy Small Block V8 flywheel... One piece rear main seal.......<br /><br />And listing it as such, should Not be an Issue on ebay.......

"This is why a Balance Job Should be Mandatory for Every Engine Overhaul............"<br />A must on all motors I rebuild.

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

Weld a 3 inch water pipe to the centre of the flywheel - makes a great workshop stand/ oil drain stand. Thats what I do with the old ones.<br /><br />Aldo<br /><br />Edit: Whats up with the time stamps on all the posts? Gremlins maybe

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

Guy's, seriously, lets not fry too many brain cells on this. I was cleaning out my shop and came across some items that I just couldn't throw out without first putting them on ebay, just in case someone might want them. I think every Merc. 5.0 and 5.7 that I have done anything with (my own included) has the 14 in. flywheel. Though I have never touched a V.P., I thought someone once said they used the smaller diameter couplers and flywheels on some of their packages. It just isn't worth doing all of the research on. If at the end of the week no-one bids ten bucks for it....to the dumpster it goes (kind of a shame, it is straight and the teeth are good).

Dunaruna, LMAO, I think I already have a few old outdrives that are filling that purpose. You know it's bad when you finally have to admitt to yourself that you have become a packrat.....even though EVERYONE has been telling you that for years.

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

hello<br /> over the years there have been many different tooth pitches and a few tooth height changes on the ring gear. the diameters are fairly standard.<br /> I had one a few years back on a 260 merc that came in eating starter drives. over the couse of two days of working on it seems some one had put a truck flywheel on it just before the drive eating problem. the ring gear had the wrong tooth pitch. go to any napa dealer and look at the book for chevy ring gears. you will be amazed at the selection.

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

A couple years back I bought a Chrysler small block flywheel and bell housing to a Volvo drive for that boat over there. $800.00 To someone it may be gold if not make a clock out of it or at least scrap it for the cash. Those things are heavy.

Re: Volvo Flywheel ??

With all the digging I did last year in my repower project, in regards to Marine apps, I have to back up Bondo here. There are 2 flywheels available, the 12.75 with the 153T ring and the 14" with the 168T ring. Now if you go automotive like Rodbolt says he had happen to him, all bets are off. <br /><br />Trust me I blew a good portion of my life researching flywheels, couplers, and rear main seals and crank patterns last fall!!!!<br /><br /> :D <br /><br />Later,
