volvo engine, carburator question

I am new to owning a volvo of any type so this is probablya dumb question, but I have just installed this motor and outdrive and I have yet to hook up the wiring to the motor, gas line oil pressure line etc.

that all shouldn't be much trouble, but the one thing I have noticed is the lack of any type of choke / butterfly on the dual solex(?) carburators.
I think that is the name on them.
this must be a motor from the seventies.
it still has points ignition.
this is a 130 horse four cylinder. I can get the particulars if needed.
how does this motor start cold?
how do the carbs work?
am I supposed to hook something up to them somewhere?
as i said I am totaly unfamiliar with them so any help here will be appreciated.
thanks in advance,

Going to need a model number to help you on this. See link below.

Re: volvo engine, carburator question

engine tag reads
AQ 130 C/270
40208 / 65112

carburators say

solex
and
44-31
in the throat of the carbs
and a number
11 on the plate on top of the carb.

I suspect the c/270 refers to the outdrive it was paired up with?
that is what is on there now.

the engine block is red.

If the motor is that old there is a good chance that someone got tired of fooling with the choke and ripped it out. Had a lot of buddies back in the day say you only boat in the summer so why bother with it and off they would go. Not saying that's it but something to think about. Look the carb over and see if it looks like some pieces are missing.

Re: volvo engine, carburator question

ALL the old Volvo Penta engines with Solex carbs DID NOT have chokes on them. To start, you pump the throttle till the start. Then they die if you try to idle them to slow.
OLD, OLD, engine and technology, but they run fine when warm. Keep the proper thermostat in them. Proper tuneups are a must. and none of it is cheap on those old engines.
