Considering buying another boat with Volvo engines and thought I read there was one of them that was made with synthetic parts that was know to crack but can't find which series it is. Found several posts indicating I should stay away from XDP drives. Is this the only one with frequent problems?

Yes, the XPD drives are bad. So bad volvo quit making them after only a short time and they don't offer replacement parts or support for them. Upgrade is to the current SX -A drive/transom assy.

Any other Volvo drive is fine, look for the SX series drives (M older, A newer), they are pretty solid and parts/service is readily available worldwide. Only major drawback to them is corrosion, keep up on anode inspection/replacement and you'll be fine
