i,m looking to buy a wellcraft 25ft with a 6cyl volvo turbo diesel in it,.closed cooling it has a 280 leg
1980's vintage,.has anyone any knowledge of how much hp,. or a possible model number,.
boat is 6hrs away, and i,d like to research it a little better,.(estate sale so no info much)
can i change from a 280 leg to a duo prop leg easy enough? i heard that the duo prop is the best for a diesel?

thanks
Nick

Re: Volvo diesel ID ??

I would guess that it's an AQAD40A or B. In the 80 to 86 year range. HP from 110 to 165.
They are the only 6 cylinder that used the 280 drive. The newer 41 series used a 290 drive.
The 280 drive can be converted to a DP is you wanted to, all you do is change the lower.
The 40's were considered a 10,000 hour engine. with proper maintenance.
They won't win any speed races, but they are dependable. The A series had max rpm at 3000 rpm, the B went to 3600 and 165 hp.

Re: Volvo diesel ID ??

Thankyou sir!!
i,ve been told by the son of the owner it runs above 3500 rpm wide open
he mentions its very good on fuel,.but not fast. did not know any speeds tho,.
would the duo prop be a worthwhile conversion?
the hearsay i,ve heard is that it makes a diesel seem more powerful than it is? maybe a little faster?
being turbo charged does it have an intercooler?

Thanks for your help

Nick
