Volvo Control Box

Boat Novice Here. 1999 Volvo 4.3 with a SX outdrive

I just did an engine swap. Motor cranks in neutral and runs good. The Volvo Control box will allow me to give it throttle in neutral forwards and backwards. However I can not get the control box to move into gear forwards or reverse. Any suggestions?

Is the neutral only button in the center of the shift lever stuck in the pushed in position?

And did you hook the shift cable up properly on both ends. If you did this and the button is not stuck then you probably have a bad controller.

The button does not appear to be stuck in. I disconnected the shift cable end at the outdrive and the controls still will not budge. When I purchased the boat the original motor was already seized and I have never known if the controls were working or not.

Disconnect the cable that doesn't move from the control box. Then see if the control box will work. If it does, replace the cable. If it doesn't, replace the control.
