I have aquired a sbc 350 gen 2. I have a boat with an old style 280. A 12 3/4 flywheel is what is in it. as far as i can tell there isnt goin to be enough room for a 14'' flywheel in that housing. I remember the dimensions from a ways back when i put in bell housing bearings and seals. Question is will the 14'' fit in that housing or am i looking at way to much money and should stop while i am ahead. THe sbc has only the offset starter holes drilled into the block and im sure i would have to go with a marine sealed mini starter beacause of the nose cone would bottom out before being able to bolt up. right?
OK hack me away !! - thanks

Re: volvo bellhousing questions

You're going to need the newer style bellhousing. The 14" flywheel will not go inside the bellhousing.

Re: volvo bellhousing questions

Why are you trying to change? Trying to find the right one is tricky at least.
The Volvo used a GM flywheel that was used on v-6 motors.I had the part number but can't find it anywhere. That block was a light duty motor with a different crank. The flywheel on it wouldn't cross over to most blocks.
I had to go to a GM dealer and match it to the short blocks I replaced.
Thoes light duty sucked a lot of valves.Jerry

Re: volvo bellhousing questions

The link below will give you the numbers for the individual parts. Note item 12, will be a bearing or a bushing that goes into the end of the crankshaft. Without it, you will destroy the flexplate and probably the new bellhousing.
Hopefully ole f...nscreename sees this thread, he ordered the same thing as a kit, but not sure from where or what the number was. But you need the same thing.

Would a new style starter work then to? Or would I still have to go with the mini starter?
