Couple of questions to get a Volvo AQ170 back up and running.
1. Installed a used Exhaust manifold that I bought on the internet it appears to be in good condition. It was a bit of a struggle to replace the old with the new, after a struggle, I finally got it in place, when there was this little noise checked out the bilge, and there it was, a frost plug that had popped out of the side next to the engine block. Looks like I have to remove and reinstall the frost plug, and then reinstall the manifold.
I am reluctant to reinsall a new frost plug by pounding on it with a hammer, just in case I crack the casting. Can I reinstall the old one using something like J-Weld to hold it place? Or are there other suggestions?

2. I was not impressed by the Volvo raw water strainer and replaced it with a better strainer. I cut the 3/4" copper pipes. Can I install a flexable water line or is there a particular reason for Volvo using copper pipe.

Thanks in Advance

Davie

Copper pipes don't collapse with vacuum on the suction side. Rubber hose will unless you use very heavy wall suction hose similar to hydraulic suction hose. Problem with that is that ordinary hose clamps can't be tightened enough to stop air leaks at the joins.
I'd stay with copper plumbing as factory.

Regards

Peter

Thanks Peter that sounds like good advice.
I always seem to have a problem connecting the pipe from the oil cooler to the water pump. Maybe when I soldered up the copper coupling when I cut out the water strainer the oil strainer and the water pump are out of alignment, how about if I replaced the copper coupling with a piece of automotive heater that would allow me to align them a whole lot easier.

Davie

Davie,
A short 2-3" of hose is not likely to cause a problem if it helps to get everything back together easier. Dont forget to roll a ridge around the pipe ends to hold your hose in place though.
Also check that if you do place a hose into the pipe that the long pipe that feeds the water into the oil cooler cant blow out from the water pressure. Makes the boat wet inside, not good.

Good luck.
Peter
