Re: volvo aq145a shaft pilot bearing removal
I finally got the bearing out! It was in much worse shape than I thought. I had to improvise and build my own puller. I took a grade 8 bolt 3 inches long and inserted it head first into the center and hung the edge of the bolthead on the backside of the bearing. I then wedged a 5/16 nut alongside the bolt to hold it in, tapping it in snugly with a small hammer. I drilled a hole in a piece of 1/4 inch plate and slipped it over the bolt. I then tightened a grade 8 nut and tried to force the bearing out. Instead the inner bearing race and cage departed, along with a sizeable chunk of the outer race. I was able to eventually pry out the rest with a piece of tool steel and a hammer. Ugggg!!!!
The bearing was very rusted. If someone had taken proper care of this drive, it would not be this bad. I have the entire drive back together, and I'm ready to put my motor back in to my 1980 Glasply. The motor mounts were trashed too, and instead of buying the ultra expensive volvo mounts, I found a cheaper alternative that is very good quality for around 32.00 each! They are available on Ebay.
