I've got a recently purchased 1988 Raven Cabin Cruiser with the Volvo aq131d engine and VP 275 outdrive..

When I go to start the motor the starter engages and runs, but it won't turn the flywheel. I've torn apart the starter, checked the solenoid, lubed the Bendix. It appears the Bendix is fully engaging.

I've inspected the flywheel too - doesn't seem warped and the teeth seem ok.

Any ideas? PLEASE help!! lol

Do you have the yellow/w red stripe wire hooked to the proper terminal on the starter solenoid?

It was, yes.. I've had the starter in and out so much in the past day, I've just left the harness wires unplugged and jumped the terminals on the solenoid to engage the starter. It engages and runs fine (the starter), but it's not grabbing the flywheel.

I even took the starter to a few marinas in the area today, and all told me the starter was in fine physical condition (including the gear).

Do you have a manual and know which wires go where? Or are you doing this from memory.
Fact is, if the starter solenoid is ok, the starter is ok, and the wiring is ok, you don't have a problem.

Well, everything is working properly except the starter isn't engaging the flywheel to crank the motor. I have NO idea what could be wrong, that's whats got me perplexed.

That is a possibility... Just odd that when I had the starter hooked up to the battery (but removed from the bell housing), I was able to jump the terminals and see the bendix was fully engaging.

Maybe you have a low battery.

Battery is brand new and fully charged.. Just cleaned the engine block ground, put the starter back in, and jumped it. Same problem.

If I rap the connection rapidly I noticed the pulley's on the front of the engine moved slightly. Again the flywheel looks excellent.

Only other possibility is the previous owner replaced the starter with a non OEM starter. Is a Valero (Made in Poland) starter standard on a VP aq131d?

Are you sure the engine or drive isn't locked up?

If the starter is engaging, then it is getting power, whether it is enough is another question. Like it was suggested, is the engine seized? Can you put a socket onto the crank bolt and turn it over manually? If you can, then the problem may be with the starter, if you can't then either your engine or drive are locked up.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Kind of makes it a DUH moment now, doesn't it.

As you have mentioned, everything else checks out ok.
