Hi there,
I recently purchased a 18.5 foot 1988 Baretta bowrider with a Volvo Penta AQ131D "rubber band" motor, which is a 120hp 4-cylinder OHC engine that is mated to a Volvo Penta 275 sterndrive. My motor starts real good and seems to run real strong, but I'm noticing two things that get my attention. For one, frequently when I shut the motor off it diesels, or runs on for probably 10-15 seconds. Also, I can only get about 4300 rpm max with 2 people in the boat, and Volvo says I should be able to achieve 5000 rpm. I'm probably overpropped with a 15"x19 pitch SS Michigan Wheel prop. Assuming that my motor is running like it should, this tells me that I should maybe go to a 15"x15 pitch prop, or maybe a 14"x17 pitch prop. I am suspicious of the timing being too far advanced because of the run-on. How do you adjust the timing on this motor? My Haines manual just describes installing a new timing belt and lining up "timing marks". Is that it? No timing light and turning the distributor? I'm not a great mechanic, and I'm trying to make the right moves without buying a collection of props, so any advice you all could lend would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
