Volvo AQ131D questions

Hi there,
I recently purchased a 18.5 foot 1988 Baretta bowrider with a Volvo Penta AQ131D "rubber band" motor, which is a 120hp 4-cylinder OHC engine that is mated to a Volvo Penta 275 sterndrive. My motor starts real good and seems to run real strong, but I'm noticing two things that get my attention. For one, frequently when I shut the motor off it diesels, or runs on for probably 10-15 seconds. Also, I can only get about 4300 rpm max with 2 people in the boat, and Volvo says I should be able to achieve 5000 rpm. I'm probably overpropped with a 15"x19 pitch SS Michigan Wheel prop. Assuming that my motor is running like it should, this tells me that I should maybe go to a 15"x15 pitch prop, or maybe a 14"x17 pitch prop. I am suspicious of the timing being too far advanced because of the run-on. How do you adjust the timing on this motor? My Haines manual just describes installing a new timing belt and lining up "timing marks". Is that it? No timing light and turning the distributor? I'm not a great mechanic, and I'm trying to make the right moves without buying a collection of props, so any advice you all could lend would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Volvo AQ131D questions

You would turn the distributor, just like any other distributor equipped engine, to set the ignition timing.

Assuming the engine is running correctly, I agree that a 15" pitch prop would be a better choice. You may find that the prop change alone fixes the run-on problem. You are really lugging that engine down with the prop you have and that makes for extremely hot combustion chambers.

I have had wonderful results using Chevron Techron fuel additive to get rid of run-on. I can say with 100% certainty that Techron does remove carbon deposits from combustion chambers and intake valves. I have witnessed it myself.

For that motor to run correctly it requires that the dwell be set correctly on the points AND then the timeing be set with a TIMEING LIGHT

Its pickey about eyeballing it :(

tommays

I didn't know Haynes even had marine service manuals, only automotive. You need to order Volvo manual 7732007 from your local VP dealer so you can get your engine setup properly.
Here is from the above manual.

Setting for regular gasoline, min 91 octane ROT:
USA: Ignition setting for regular petrol (RON+MON)/2 = min 87 octane
Basic setting .................................................... 6° BTDC (0–14.17 r/s = 0–850 rpm)
Stroboscope setting ......................................... 32–36° BTDC (70 r/s = 4200 rpm)
Contact gap...................................................... 0.40 mm (0.01575")
Dwell angle..................................................... 62±3°
