Hey guys had my boat out couple times this spring so far and noticed without changing anything performance is way off. It starts like it always has, idles like it always has, very responsive throttle control 2300rpm and less, good for docking, but when I go for it, it's taking like 1/2 a km to fully get out of the hole and am sitting max rpm at 4500 with just myself in the boat when last year I'd jump out of the hole and plane pretty easily and 4900/5000 rpm with 4 people was easy to hit. Going to check plugs and do compression check, and timing/dwell check, just got back from the lake still good enough for me but any tips would be greatly appreciated. This helps my decision to change this 131D to the 260B I got last year.

Yeah read that did everything including solid lifter clearance checks again including a real volvo penta oil filter, all good skipped compression and plugs cause it started so good first time, even with the fogging oil in after I primed the carb. Have Bosch Platinum WR7DP's and all 4 are simillar in appearance but showing different gaps and a couple have tiny pinholes on the electrode side. D'oh to miss the obvious again!!! Going with NGK BPR7EIX iridiums, 0.035" gap that'll probably do it. Also the tank that had the old stabalized gas from last year isn't quite replenished with new gas, although it seems fresh enough it's probably what killed the plugs. I like the recurring theme in that about the whole wanna do it on your driveway or at the dock with your family waiting? Good read.
Thanks oh yeah compressions good too 130 on 2 127 on 1 and 125 on 1 not bad for a 20 year old motor!!

Compression seems a little low, mine is around 155 to 160 lbs. I think your problem is that you are not getting timing advance at the higher rpm's. Check your mechanical advance system to ensure the springs are intact and that the advance system is not seized. If everything checks out, my next guess is your carb, maybe time for a rebuild??

Have a great day,

Rob.

yeah thanks for the tip, rebuilt carb last year and it seems ok other thing is the gas inline filter forgot all about it till this morn will check but guessing it's a combo of gas starve and bad plugs. 'wow 150 lbs what year is your motor. mine's an 88

Get this...900 rpm and timing light says 30 degrees BTDC on no. 1 cyl. for crying out loud. my timing belt looks perfect. Any way it has streched? I'll be setting it to the 6 degrees the manual suggests tomorrow, new plugs, rotor, points lubed cam wick too. I think I'm back in the saddle this weekend. Guess it may be degrading and streching over time. I'll probably wind up getting a new belt anyways, funny thing my Seloc manual says points to be 0.016" and my Volvo user guide (original '89) says 0.040" I set it to what was in there with the old set 0.016" will try dwelling it as well. Imagine that!!!

Maybe time to replace the belt. Like I said earlier check your mechanical advance system. I think the springs broke in which case the motor will still run like crap. It is out by that much because something happened, and you need to find out what and fix it.

Have a greeat day,

Rob.

I would not worry about the camshaft timing belt just yet. Install new points and set the points gap using the number from the Volvo book and then check the dwell, adjust points gap as needed to get within the proper dwell angle range. Then set the timing. Point gap (dwell) can be off far enough to make the timing mark be way off.

Do that first so you will know where you are at. Try not to let your desires to get the 260 in there short circuit your trouble shooting efforts!

I would bet your advance springs in the distributor are gone (rusted or broken) or the weights are froze up.
I really wouldn't worry about that 260 at all. You do realize it will take gear ratio change, and an exhaust y change, and your transom shield may not allow for the exhaust Y you need.

Thanks for all the help guys not claiming to be a distributor expert by any strech I did twist the rotor to check springs and weights and it snapped right back and visually, they look fine, yse will keep persuing this motor as I have the complete 280 leg that came with the 260B motor and transom shield, but I do have a renewed reason not to swap just now...GAS PRICES>>>

Clymer manual says points to be 0.016" and my Volvo user guide (original '89) says 0.040" OMG LOL 0.040MM not " whoops so it IS 0.016" for points gap, according to both books. Could only get timing down to 10 degrees BTDC before slot on dist will still allow the hold down bolt to go in after rotating distributor, then pulled cap and noticed points gap at 0.018" reset em to 0.016" and viola, achieved 6 degrees BTDC with adjustment left on distributor rotation. Chunkier idle too as one would expect after retarting timing 24 degrees. I think I'm all set. Thanks a million guys, now just a painful trip to the gas station on my way to the lake tomorrow. Either that or by a 1 way ticket to Vegas for the same dough hah!!

Eureka, it's completely awesome!!! Only thing is 200 rpm off and that's attributable to prop sounds like line cutter is backed off some slight grind in there. Also lost shift linkage cover in lake, darn!!! but it rips now, just like two summers ago. I'll letcha know if it can pull me up on skis sure feels like it. Tons of jump and planes out easily even at 2/3rds throttle, little rich diesels unless I let it idle for a minute. Thanks for the tips guys this exercise was a complete success
