I hope I am not repeating this. I have a 1986 volvo 4 cyl
It starts good and runs good when not engaged. When I engaged the drive it runs good under 2300 rpm. When i try to increase the speed it chokes and stalls out. I spray some starting fluid into the carb it keeps running but then stalls out. It seems as though its gas starved but only when the drive is engaged. I have rebuilt the down draft carb ($80 for the kit what a rip off) the fuel pump works. There are no restrictions from the tank to the carb. I timed it and put on a new coil, points and plugs. I just can't figure this one out. It runs great in the yard but as soon as I put it under load in the lake it stalls out Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Volvo AQ131A stalling out

First of all, get that can of starting fluid off the boat. Give it to someone you dislike. Unless you are planning on putting new pistons in your engine. Then, go ahead and use it.

You probably need a new carb. If the passages get plugged up with water and corrosion and all you do is throw a kit in it after spraying the parts with some carb and choke cleaner and expect it to work, you are just wasting your time. The carbes need dipped in a good carb cleaner and the passages blowed out, then, as Bondo stated in another post. You have a 50/50 chance of it working.

Have you done any compression or vacuum guage test on your engine?
