Well first I'd like to say thanks in advance for any help.
Ok what I have have is a 1986 Bayliner 1650 capri, Volvo penta AQ131A, 275 outdrive. well last year couldn't ask for a better starting engine first hit of the key and away we go, this year I noticed it hard to start, after a long period of time and fussuing with it, it finally started put it in water and ran great without incident no indications of trouble except the hard starting?,
took out of water, put back in 2 weeks later to lay moorn at my dock, same thing hard start but ran great, until I reached my boat dock!! about 5mi away then it just shut down and couldn't get it started, after giving it half a kick of the key it would start but die right off and hasn't started since.
since then I have tried to troubleshoot, I noticed now that the tilt/trim now doesn't work either which did prior to it shutting down? and the engine won't start either? it is getting gas, I checked and cleaned the points checked for loose connections at ignition switch, right now I'm lost. at this point i'm at wits end. any and all advice would be greatly Apprecieated.:)

Thanks to All

Are you getting spark at the plugs?......
Do you have 12v at the coil with the key in the run position?......

Hi, thanks for the quick response, That is my next step, I was so frustrated when I abanded the spark issue! I have to travel back and fourth from my house to my boat to work on it now that it is stranded at my dock, also would you happen to know the point gap on that paticular engine, my sources tell me it is .016 would that be correct? I may have jumped the gun asking for help before checking the spark:redface: I figured the worse:(, I will do that and let you know the outcome.:)

Thanks

Hello there,

I have the same engine. I would do a tune-up, replace all the wear parts, plugs, points, rotor, cap etc. You said it is getting fuel so that should be OK, even though it sounds like it could be a fuel issue, maybe time for a carb rebuild. Check and clean all your battery connections, inculding the ground. Check for spark. Tell us what you find and we can give you more suggestions.

Also on my engine, I replaced the points with Pertronix electronic ignition, part #2842 if I remember correctly. You may want to consider this also. No more points.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob.

well now I'm getting nothing:confused:?, won't turn over no instruments. checked fuses, replaced 2, ingnition switch went out, replaced, coil was getting spark then stopped got real hot and was leaking oil, replaced coil still no spark? reset points at 0.16?, checked inline fuse the big one replaced that, checked and cleaned connections on battery, and on engine pretty much coverd boat from front to back and still nothing:confused: only thing not checked was the relay, how do you check that? replace it? I'm not giving up on this one it ran to good before all this happened and is probably something simple just have exhausted all my knowledge at this point:mad: Help....

With all the key on testing is it possible your battery is dead?

I would agree with Reel Poor, Check the battery first thing. I would guess that is dead also.

You might have a dead cell in it, trust me, I had one on the lake and had to be towed back, it ran fine, until we got rolling then stopped to cook out. Then I went to start the boat, it would not start, but acted ok, just wouldn't fire. We even jumped it and still nothing, I also had 2 batteries in the boat. Both running off the switch would not give me anything.

I now know that a bad cell sucks, lol and you can get around it if you unhook the one with the bad cell, but then I had never run into it.

I would make sure you have plenty of power, if not, take the battery out charge it and try again. If that still won't work, you might try another battery. If you are lucky it will fire right up.
