I figured Since my other thread isnt getting any response I would try a new one. The question I have is how in gods creation do you take off the bearing on top the steering arm inside the boat above the drive? thanks

In a nutshell, pull the upper gear box off the drive, then disconnect the steering arm retaining bolt. Then pry the steering fork down out of the bushings (NOT BEARINGS)

Don't even think about trying to drive the steering fork out. Or you will be beyond repair.

I thought I gave you the link to the OEM manual before, if not, here it is.

Thanks fo responding Don. im guessing that bearing I am taling about just stays there. For some reason I cant find the steering arm retaining bolt. Am i correct in guessing its the bolt that looks like it clamps the arm to the shaft by that bearing in the boat?

Just to clear something up for me do you know how deep the pivot pin goes. Could it be that the one bolt that broken off in one of the smaller holes in the pin is threaded in too far and is not letting the pin turn at all to get it loose?

I've been following your struggle with your pin removal but have not been able to come up with any great ideas, what a PITA!!!!

I pulled the pin out of my drive to get a look.

The pin is about 7/8 on an inch long

I wish I had some great advise.

If the broken bolt was tightened down and snapped than yes it would prevent the pin from turning however I think i would continue to try to get it to turn, at least a little bit. You may need to use a chisel on the side of one on the holes and hammer on it a bit to break it loose, back and forth. Lots of wd 40.

The threads in the small hole of the pin are only in the bottom half of the pin, I wonder if you could tap the upper part with a tap or self tapping screw, then grind off the bottom of the screw so it goes through where the old threads are and turn it out that way. Or drill it and tap it, just don't drill through the gear box. As Don said, a little pressure, then tap around it with a mallet.

Not sure what else to say. The pins got to come out one way or another!!!

I'll try to send you positive vibes.:)

Re: Volvo aq131a/275 steering arm ???

Well i know its not reccomended but I had to remove the helmut from the steering fork. That pin is not coming out. The more I look at it the more I think the threads from the broken bolt are in there too far to let the pin come loose or turn. I did have another question. I noticed some oil in the bellows when i got the clamps off. i did not drain the upper gear box first though. Does this sound like a problem?

Re: Volvo aq131a/275 steering arm ???

Im confused as crap here. once again. The oil was not milky at all. I should of said that. sorry. But I do know that it is coming from the gear box. most of the oil in the upper gear box is gone which means it leaked into the bellows.... Now my main ??? is could it be just the shaft seal where the u joint goes into the box? The weird thing is I took off the box and had it u joint down and filled it up with oil and no leak and also turned it the other way u joint down and oput wd40 puddled around the seal and it stayed there. Could it only leak when running??

Re: Volvo aq131a/275 steering arm ???

Well heres the scoop. I am having the seal overnighted to me and having my local volvo Penta dealer press out the bearing out of the little housing that comes off the upper gear box. Hopefully monday he can get it done. Other than the oil and seals and o rings I am replacing im looking at about $20 for the part and about 60 to have it pressed and reassembled. ill keep updating when i know something else. thanks guys

Re: Volvo aq131a/275 steering arm ???

Well im about to put a bullet in this boat. The service garage said they cannot get the seal out. Anyone ever heard of this? He said he tried pressing the bearing out also and it wouldnt come out. I could see no signs of water or rust so im getting a little ticked. From what i could tell from the manual it said that once the snap ring is out it should come apart yes no???? The inner metal ring should come out and then the seal as far as I know. So once again any input would be of help
