Right, just realised that the trim tabs were not fully down and got the boat to plane and this increased revs to 4000rpm but still would not go any higher and the growling was deafening, can this increase in revs help with the trouble shooting, just the fuel pump and carbs left now to replace.....rather not the carbs (quite costly) <br /><br /><br />Running out of things to check now, complete ignition check and tune up completed, fuel system tested as far as the carbs, head serviced, exhaust checked. The only things left are the prop and carbs, although i have stripped and cleaned carbs could they still be causing the problem? i have not played with the mixture other than the base setting given in the manual, which i think was 1 1/4 turns from seat, also cannot see where i can fit a vacum guage on the inlet manifold? Oh and one thing i have noticed when i changed the plugs..they were as black as newgates knocker, i.e very sooty. <br /><br /><br />Have a 21ft cabin cruiser fitted with a Volvo 130d which will not go above 3000 revs, have changed points, dist cap, rotor, plugs & leads, engine revs fine out of gear but growls at 3000 revs, any help appreciated.

Have you done a compression test?

do the basics first, spark, compression etc.<br />its not uncommon for the timing belt to slip a tooth and cause this issue.

It would be very uncommon for his timing belt to slip a tooth.<br /><br />It doesn't have one.

I have yet to do a compression test, and I think this has a chain.

Compression was fine, changed fuel and filters, its as though the there is like a growl from the carbs when it wont go above 3000rpm, it also growls in nuetral when you rev up from tick over, also it is ticking over a bit high at 1100rpm?

Hi Niel. The reason you get the growl is that the carbs are opening but the engine revs aren't coming up to match. Sounds like fuel starvation possibly blocked jet in carb. Very basic carbs, just take off tops and hand have look. Once flame arresters are out of the way you have 3 bolts and 1 countersunk screw, don't forget to remove fuel pipe from underneath. Hope this helps . Ataylor<br />By the way I have a second hand AQ130 with a set af recon carbs on it, for sale. I may seperate.

Sounds like the Carb. needs some Serious Attention,..........<br />You could try a Rebuild Kit,...........<br />Sometimes Replacement is the Answer...........

thanks for that, will have a look. someone mentioned today that it might be the fuel accelerater pump on the carb, does that sound likely?

Accl pump feeds raw fuel to the engine when you throw the throttle open. It stops the hesitation when the motor suddenly gets a mouthful of air and the carb hasn't had time to catch up. Although I doubt it's your problem, it's part of the rebuild /replace. Make sure you have good fuel delivery, anti-siphon, fuelpump, fuel filter etc. Ignition can also cause these issues. I had a coil once that would not let the engine go above 3k. There are A LOT of posts regarding this issue. Good luck...

taken carbs off, inspected jets, all look fine, acc' pumps look ok and squirt fuel into the chambers, is it still worth getting the rebuild kits even though visually it seems fine?

Not sure what you mean by ticking over at 1100 rpm. Is that the idle speed? If compression is good, points etc are new, I would replace the coil. Cheap and eliminates it from the equation. I try the cheap stuff first. Check vacuum, fuel pressure anti-siphon etc. Maybe I missed something, but I'm not seeing where you replaced the fuel filters (both of them) or checked the water separator.

Ticking over = idle speed.

Since your last post, have you done something about your low compression? If the engine has been torn down and reassembled with these symptoms, and you are sure timing etc is on, I would be looking for air intake leaks..especially if it won't idle under 1100 rpm.

You are Not going to get a good running engine with 95-120 compression, no matter what you do with the carb. The engine has problems that need checked out before you try to run it again. Your engine should be seeing between 170 and 200 psi when doing a compression test. Even around 150 it should run fair, but 95-120..... forget it.

Re: Volvo AQ130D Growling Problem >>Improvement>>

Ok chaps, the story is that I got someone who actually knew what they were doing to check the compression, it shows all 4 160 or above......... <br />I will learn........<br />As for filters there is not a water seperater fitted, i checked the filter in the little finger operated pump located under the raw water filter, also the screen filters in the carbs. However Could you help me out with this "Check vacuum, fuel pressure anti-siphon etc"<br />I cannot see any kind of vacum pipes anywhere, also how would i check the fuel pressure.<br /><br />Many Thanks ;)

About the fuel pressure testing, see Don S post here:http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=013991#000000<br />As for the vacuum, you will have to find a port on the intake manifold or carb to get a reading. <br />Anti Siphon can be checked simply by removing it and take a look. It is located where the fuel line enters the fuel tank. The press/vac guage is fairly cheap at any auto parts supply. Good ones run about $50 USD and some have fitting kits that might help. Since it runs above 1100, I still think there is a vacuum leak. (air intake)

Re: Volvo AQ130D Growling Problem >>Improvement>>

Ok, Took the carbs of last week and stripped them both down, good clean up, checked diaphrams, all jets clean, yesterday pulled fuel pump and rebuilt with new parts. Still making this growling sound above 3000 rpm, when i push throttle foward growling just gets louder but no increase in rpm, someone mentioned a sticking valve? could this be a possible cause, would rather not pull the head but if its needed then will have to do it, I have today got some "power Tune" and followed the directions except that I thought I will leave it overnight till tomorrow to start it again.<br />Thanks in advance to all :)
