Got my old volvo running but have 2 issues.

Motor runs great above 1200rpm's or so but will not idle. I cleaned the carbs before starting the boat because it had set for over 5 years. Should I just run it some more (will it clear itself up) or is there something else I should try.

Also, the water pump has a steady drip coming from the bottom weephole. Is there a seal that can be replaced or do I need a new waterpump? Is it something that I can let go for now and monitor? If I ever make it out I'll be in fresh water. If replacement is the only option, where is the best place to get the part. Not sure how to find out volvo part # for it.

Thanks

svracer,
Sounds as if your idle passages are blocked or the carbs are not synchronised correctly and one is working harder than its partner.
If you had the carbs off the manifold check that you have both the throttle shafts set the same.
Use a piece of 1/4" or 5/16" plastic hose to listen to the airflow of each carb.
If they are not equal you need to release one of the clamps on the joining shaft to separate the two butterfly shafts before altering the idle speed and mixture screws.
Your engine should be able to idle down to about 600 - 700 rpm in gear.
Remove your sea water pump and get a kit for it.
Impellor and 2 seals. Take note of which way the 2 seals are installed as they are different.
The shaft may be OK to use again.
The bushings in the housing and cover need to have some clearance or they will overheat if too close.
The danger of ignoring the water leak is that some water may pass through the inner oil seal and find its way into the crankcase and cause more damage.
Good luck,
Peter

THanks Peter. I was hoping that the pump could be repaired vs. being replaced. Would you happen to know the part #'s for the seals?

Mine is a 170C engine (3.0 litre B30) but I think the pump is the same.
It's a JOHNSON Pump but the bits I bought from Volvo here in NZ were not expensive so I would start there.
I'm not sure if Sierra service the bits at all.
DonS would probably answer that for you.
Even Iboats may have some parts for it.

Peter

Re: Volvo AQ130C problems

I took the impeller out to see if there where some seals that could be replaced. After pulling the impeller and the shaft out there is nothing left to the pump except for the housing. I went to lowes and got a thin rubber washer and installed it on the back side of the impeller. This stopped the water from dripping. Ran the boat for several hours this weekend for several hours with no apparent problems.
