I have a friend that is struggling to fix his Volvo aq125 4 cylinder. He says that after the belt is replaced the engine runs well for a while. Then it starts to run rough and snaps the belt. Is the belt jumping teeth and eventually snapping? Any other possibities. How can he fix this? THanks in advance.
Scott

A common problem on those engines were the timing belt pulleys would corrode and/or wear and would damage a new belt. Many times you can see the black rubber dust on the motor from the belt wearing.

Scott,
if the pulley is ok, check the exhaust, if the exhaust is corroded inside, it could be leaking water into the cylinder, which forces the belt to snap or to lose its teeth.

Check the tensioner, if the bearing is rough, it can lockup and just rub on the belt till it snaps.

Also check the tooth profile of the belt matches PERFECTLY the tooth profile of the gears.
Also the belt must not be over-tensioned as this may also lead to premature failure.

Regards

Peter
