The oil dipstick on my 1983 Bayliner Capri w/ AQ 125/270 outdrive broke off where it attaches to the block. A repair shop removed the broken dipstick assembly and was planning to replace it with genuine Volvo-Penta replacement parts, but I had them stop work when they gave me a quote of over $600 to replace it. So now I just have a hole in the block. Can someone give me the specifics of a "universal" dipstick assembly that might work for this application? Would a machine shop have to be involved or are these a simple push in assembly? The reason the old one broke was that the long dipstick always caught on the edge of the block when pushing it back in. Shorter and straight would be better. Thanks.

The aq125 is a VOLVO car motor, either a B21 or B23.

The marine version of the dipstick tube may or may not be the same as a car. You need a certain Alaskan to verify that.

The AQ125 is a Volvo engine, and is nothing like anything GM or Mercruiser has.
You can probably make a new dipstick tube and dipstick, you just have to pull the drain plug out of the pan and make sure all the oil is out and install a new filter.
Then make your tube and dipstick. Put in 4 quarts of oil, run the engine till you get oil pressure. Allow to drain. Make a mark on the dipstick, that is the 1 quart low mark. Now add another quart of oil and make a new mark. That's full.
