Bought a 1977 Bayliner w/AQ255A/280(GM350). Alternator(stock)is a SEV Marchal 35a that is weak. Does anyone know what it can be upgraded to so that the old mounts can be used, and it also is 3 wire-two wires and one clip wire. Boat motor rebuilt in 96, and boat in great shape. I found one SEV, but it's $300! Retired and broke, so looking for some help and part numbers. Thanks in advance, Robby

Robby.
Mine was replaced with a BOSCH alternator but I would think that most of the small Delco Alts have the same footprint on the lower bracket.
I have a 35a (Motorola) and the foot looks fairly standard to me.
Make sure that whatever you use it is a Marine alt with a sealed brush holder to keep the sparks inside and out of harms way

Peter

Re: Volvo Alternator upgrade

Thanks Peter! And of course a Marine unit. And if anybody else has any info, please let me know. I can rebuild in the dark any Harley or auto-M/C motor, but the A+ was in Auto Shop-I got a D- in Electronics Shop. I can fry a motor by looking at it! I just need to know that the 3 wires on the back will go to the right terminals on something different..again, thanks all..I love these forums! Robby

Re: Volvo Alternator upgrade

I think the mounts are pretty standard. I just repalced a mando alternator on my mercruiser with a Delco marine one wire. I left the exciter wire and other wire in the same plug undone and wrapped up. I then hooked the orange(bat)wire to main pole and the ground to the case, and it works great. Besides this unit is a 63 amp, unlike the original 55 amp, and these two units had identicle mounts. Good luck.

Gave up and gave the local in town $285 for a rebuilt, and will ebay/boat boneyard for a upgrade later on. Die at the credit limit is my motto (and getting close)...life is to short to wait for deals. Thanks all for the info..
