So while its great fun running around in our rebuilt wellcraft, the carby is giving us grief. its a holley 650, but a model only made for a couple of years, so the right rebuild kit consists of bits from 3 kits (info from holley); to simplify the question - can i buy a slighty used 650 from ebay (off a similar sized car engine) and bolt on and go? what sort of tuning would be needed...

You need a marine carb or BOOM

post your carb number up. guaranteed there is a carb kit for it. BTW, its usually cheaper to buy bowl and metering plate gaskets, base gasket and power valve by themselves than it is to buy a kit.

Car carbs are vented to the outside,...
Boat carbs are vented into the intake manifold,....

Is it just the 'j' pipes that vent to the manifold?

carb is stamped r84037 2601 - the main bugbear is the top of this carb is 1 piece including the tops of the float bowls

this is the response from holley: "Kit # is 37-1541, Floats are Sales # 116-3. Power valves will be different. If customer needs specific power valves. He will need Sales # 125-85 bought separately."

you can never use the power valve in most kits anyways. Marine power valves are usually #25 or #35.

per the Holley book, http://documents.holley.com/techlibrary_carb_numerical_listing.pdf the renew kit for your R84037 is 703-59 not sure where the 37-1541 comes from

FYI 703-59 is only $43 where 37-1541 covers both the 4010 and 4011 carbs and is $65
