Starter on my 2006 Chaparral 276 ssi died last weekend. Performed diagnostics per Don's cheat sheet... proper readings at the secondary relay as well as proper voltage at the starter solenoid. New batteries, all terminal connections are good. So figure either the soleniod is bad or the motor itself has failed. Given the behavior before failiure (slower and slower turning over of the engine in spite of fresh batteries) I believe the later.

I was in the process of pulling the starter, wedged in the engine compartment like a pretzel, and am unable to free one of the 2 bolts using a ratchet with some taps from a hammer. What's the prescribed method for getting these bolts loose - impact hammer? Do I have to be concerned with shearing the bolt? (note - boat has only been in fresh water and there is no corrosion whatsoever around the starter or the rest of the engine for that matter).

Appreciate the advise. Thanks.
