You were three quarts low on oil ?? when was the last time you checked it ? Now that you have added three quarts, please double check that the level is right. With the boat in the water, or on the trailer at the same angle as the boat sits in the water(adjust trailer tongue jack to get that same level), pull the dipstick, wipe, re-insert all the way, pull and read. If overfilled by a large amount, correct that before proceeding.

I had the same problem. This is an email from another boater. I replace my spark plug wires /plugs (all looked great)

Yes, the problem was the spark plug wires. I also replaced the distributor cap and rotor. 6000rpms out of the water is reving it too high. this is because it does not have the water load on it.
hope this helps
dave
-----Original Message-----
From: Chuck & Diane Neste []
Sent: Sunday, June 19, 2005 10:27 AM
To:
Subject: Boat Question

Hello Dave,

I came acorss your message posted on a boat forum. Did you ever resolve your problem? I have a 1988 rebuilt 4.3L and took it out for the first time yesterday. I can get my boat past 2300 rpms but out of the water on the trailer with ear muffs, I can get 6000 rpms(briefly).I have a brand new electric fuel pump with all filters new. My carb was winterized last year and was also bought new June of last year.

Thanks
Chuck

Thanks
Chuck in Atlanta, GA

messgae posted on another forum

My 1996 4.3L with 2bbl merc carb does not accelerate or come up to proper RPM's. this past weekend I could only get 3900 to 4000 RPMs versus the normal 4600 to 4800. When accelerating the motor lacks power. I replaced the plugs and cannister fuel/water filter, checked the Carb fuel filter (perfectly clean) and it still performed without power. Clymers says it could be the electric fuel pump or even the anti-siphon valve. any help would be appreciated in where I should look for the problem? thanks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have a water seperating fuel filter? Looks like a remote oil filter, mine is in-line just before the fuel pump. If so, check/change. Usually when I dump mine, I'll dump into a mason jar to check for water. You can dump and reuse the filter, but the elements are usually 5 dollars or so. Water in the filter will cause the symptom you are describing. 40 psi of oil pressure is more than enough for a big block.

Re: volvo 7.4 wont go above 2600 rpm

found the problem....it was the oil pressure sensor ....bad sensor telling the computer i had low oil pressure therefore limiting my motor to 2600 rpm. at least the emergency saftey monitoring system is working....
