Howdy folks...
The patient is a 1993 Volvo 501b.
The symptoms: runs great between 2-3k rpm. Starts fine very time. At 3600 rpm, it develops a hard stumble and won't go any higher. It has a slight stumble when pushing the boat onto a plane at full throttle.
Here's the history:
Motor overheated last year and was replaced with a new long block. Boat was out of commission much of the summer, and didn't go above 3k due to break in.
This summer:
1. New plugs
2. New Plug wires
3. New cap/rotor
4. new coil (the old coil was leaking oil out of the top- boiling over?).
6. New fuel pump - the oil has gas in it, and the pump was seeping into the bottom of the engine.
7. Timing has been checked, and advance appears to be working - but I don't have a timing light that has the advance feature to verify.
8. The carb was rebuilt due to a hot start issue last year -the guy who rebuilt it said he was not real comfortable with the carb. Last year, if you shut the engine down after running a few minutes it would flood. Rebuild seems to have addressed the issues.
I had a mechanic play with the boat for 3 weeks. The new fuel pump reduced the rough running, but it's still not able to get over 3600 rpm.
The mechanic suggests the valves may need adjusting, or the carb needs to be replaced with a new edelbrock.
What do you guys think? Any other ideas on what I can check?
Thanks,
Jim
