I got a shaggy dog story for you:
1993 Volvo 501b in a Larson 20sei. At the end of the '04 season, my wife hit something submerged, kicked the drive up and broke off the raw water elbow. It ran great.. until it melted.
Heads were warped, water in the oil. Local shop wanted to install a new Volvo block for $6,000.00 plus installation.
I purchased a Vesuvio (Recon out of Philly) 305 short block and after a couple months they finally returned the boat at the end of the '05 season. Boat stumbled coming up on a plane, and we didn't push it max rpm due to break in.
Spring '06, we pass the break in and try to water ski with the boat. It dogs coming out of the hole, missing badly, and won't go beyond about 3800 rpm.
I took it another shop, and they had the boat the rest of the summer. Here's what they've replaced:
1. Fuel pump
2. coil
3. temporarily swapped a different carb in
4. Plugs
5. plug wires/cap/rotor
6. checked timing
7. Checked compression - all good
8. Ran the boat off a standalone gas tank - no difference
9. Disconnected the engine electricals from the boat wiring - jumpered the coil to battery to see if it was boat wiring - no difference.
10. Rebuilt the carb (I'm not highly confident about the shop that built the carb..)
I've been given the boat back 3 times and every time I take it out, it's the same: lousy acceleration and low top end.
One other clue, 2 of the plugs foul more quickly than the others. I don't smell gas on the plug, it's not oily, but is black.
The guy who's been working with me is a really good guy and has a ton of experience, but we are both stumped.
We have not done a leakdown check yet, so he's going to do that just to be complete.
Any other thoughts before my wife makes me lose this money pit?
Thanks!!
Jim
