Volvo 5.7 oil level

Hi,

1998 Volvo 5.7 gs
I changed oil and filter. I know the book calls for 6 qts oil with filter, but I put in 5 qts. ran the engine and checked for leaks. None. Checked oil level and it showed 1 qt low. I let it sit overnight and checked the dipstick again and it showed full. What is going on?

Oh I used a fram filter for GM .

When the engine is running some oil remains in the top of the engine and also gets splashed all over the inside of the engine (if left it will all drain back into the sump). This is why you are suppose to check the oil level after the engine has been running and not after it has been sat overnight. It sounds like you should add a qt..

Are the rocker cover vents clear? If not, the engine heat may build up a slight pressure to push oil up/down the dipstick tube.
