We are considering purchase of a new 2008 Larson with a 5.0GL and SX drive.
When we took it for a test drive, we noticed a whining noise when in-gear at idle. The noise did not existing when in neutral at idle. We couldn't tell if the noise was still there when on plane--if it was still there, it was drown out by all the other usual noises.

The salesman blew it off as "normal", but also admitted he was more familiar with inboards.

Someone else I talked to said there should be LESS noise when it gear at idle due to a slightly lower RPM

Your thoughts/opinions/is the noise a problem?

Thanks in advance for your comments

some drive are "noisier" than others. We can't hear the whine that you heard, so I would suggest testing a couple other SX's and compare the "whining". Then you'll have an idea about what is normal.

If the noise is enough to give you pause, perhaps you should pass on this boat. It's a 2008. Thats awfully new to be making noise.
If you really like the boat, it might be worth going to a different shop and talking to a mechanic. Offer him $50 to go with you on another test drive. The dealer shouldn't have a problem with that, and you can get a qualified opinion.

a 2008 boat should have a warranty and it should be transferrable.

have the seller take it to the dealer to be looked at.

Is the dealer offering any kind of warranty on the drive after running it in that condition, or a reduced price to cover the damage?
