OK, I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I noticed this hose attachment (PIC ATTACHED) on the side of my Volvo and when I look up the parts on this site it shows to be a Engine Flush System. Is this a way to hook up water flow to the motor during a out of water run or do I still use the ear muffs on the out drive? Fixing to Winterize my boat and curious what this hose attachment can be used for. THANKS IN ADVANCE.......

Yep that's what it's there for. It can be used for running out of water, or flushing after salt water use. Just screw the hose onto that fitting. Without the motor running you'll see the water exiting backwards out the water intake grates on the outdrive, but as soon as the impeller begins spinning it'll suck it up like normal.

I’m guessing skydive has a different system on his boat. His garden hose attachment is T’ed into the water intake hose.

On your 5.0 GL-A that hose goes to a T then from the T goes to both block drains. It can only be used for flushing the engine when it is NOT running. Do NOT use this hose for winterizing. It really doesn’t work very well for flushing. If I remember right Volvo only used this setup for one year and then switched to the setup skydive has. When you winterize I recommend that you remove the hoses from the block drain nipples so you can poke them out. They do like to plug up, and if you try to use this hose to drain your block you may find that only one side drains. And a ? drained block is a bad thing.

Thanks MUC. I bought a kit that has a hose attachment with a "T" and you fill the container with the pink antifreeze. When ready, you turn the valve and it flows the antifreeze in till your done. I was just curious if i could use this flush attachment on the motor instead of the ear muffs for injecting the antifreeze once the motor is at operating temp. Here is the kit I bought, link below.

I use that kit sometimes. But I drain all the water out of the block, manifolds, etc. before I run the anti-freeze. Then I drain the anti-freeze. I like to leave everything empty. When you see pink anti-freeze come out of all the areas that had water, you KNOW you’re safe.

But I'm in Minnesota and it can get real cold.

I was planning on doing the same. I'm in South Texas so a hard freeze never happens, but better safe then sorry. Here is what I plan to do from my research, first time winterizing. Ive had outboards that we use all year for fishing so never really winterize them and they stay in the garage.

Add fuel stabilizer and full tank of gas
replace fuel filter
run motor to full temp with earmuffs
change motor oil and filter
add antifreeze with my kit while running
fog carb once antifreeze is all in, stop motor
shoot fogger into each spark plug hole
drain all hoses and plugs of antifreeze in block
change lower drive gear oil
run antifreeze threw bulge pump
pull battery, charge
store boat

Did I miss anything ? :)

Re: Volvo 5.0GL-A Engine Flush System

Very interesting.

My apologies to gapple, I saw 5.0GL and read about a t-fitting so I assumed it was the water inlet similar to mine. I did not know Volvo ever had this setup that you have. Thanks for correcting me muc.

It seems like your list is pretty complete. A couple notes however:

1)There are many opinions on filling the fuel tank versus leaving it where it is versus draining it. I've always just added stabilizer to whatever is in there at the time and called it good.

2)Most people will suggest draining the block and manifolds before adding antifreeze, but if you are planning to drain it all anyways, well it's the same effect I imagine. You really can save money and not worry about the antifreeze.

3)When you unscrew the 4 drain plugs, there is a good chance little to no water will run out. Many people make the assumption that they are good to go. There should be A LOT of water that comes out of each. Take a small screwdriver or piece of wire and prod the hole. You'll feel all the sand/mud/rust crap blocking the hole, and then water will gush out for awhile. This is very important.

4)When draining the hoses, make sure you drain the big hose running to the circulation pump. It can hold a lot of water and can damage the pump. With that hose off, and the hoses to your raw water pump off, bump the starter a couple times. This will ensure the water pumps are empty.
