Hello, My name is Joe and I am new to this forum. I have been digging around abit and looks like alot of knowledge here.

Volvo 5.0Gi fuel problem...I think??

I am pretty sure its a fuel problem because a sprayed a little gas down the intake and it started for a second.... From my research it looks like it has two fuel pumps. a high pressure and a low pressure. I also understand that there is a 12.5 breaker and I am sure some other electrical things that would cause this.
Does anyone know of any "known issues" with this fuel system? I was told to "just replace the low pressure pump" because that is ussually the problem??
Any suggestions are greatly appeciated. Thanks Joe

Thanks for the response Bond-o

I replaced the filters about six month's ago on both engines. The other 5.0 Gi on the port side runs fantastic and they pull from the same tank, so I can eliminate fuel contamination issues.

Cheers, Joe

I'm sorry I don't know more about your motor, to help you diagnose Which fuelpump is giving you grief.....

Good Luck.....

What is the full model number of your engine? Before you start replacing those pump, there are also relays and other thing that could cause your problem. Including the ignition system.
Besides a low pressure pump lists for 220 bucks. or would you rather troubleshoot and find the real reason for it not starting.

Re: Volvo 5.0Gi starting problem

Thanks for comment Don... from what I have read around this forum, you are the mastermind!

The complete model # is 5.0Gi pwtr
the next number on the plate is.
4110190242

3868945

This boat is not something I can trailer. It sits at my dock behind my house. Volvo dealer house calls are a fortune! If its something simple, I would like to fix it myself.

You mentioned that the Low pressure pump was 220.00. Yes that is correct! the house call is double that.....lol ...But you are a very wise man....If there are other "likely" things that would cause this, I will start there.

When I turn the ignition on the pump is suppose to run for 2 seconds and shut off. It doesn't.... so I am leaning torward a fuel pump relay, a fuel pump of a EMC???

Thanks alot in advance for your help.
Cheers, Joe

That would have been helpful to know right off.
First thing I would do is see if the pump will run. Disconnect the plug and with a couple of jumpers, hooked to good positive and negative, see if it runs. (check both pumps)
Since it's both pumps not operating, I would really suspect the fuel pump relay. You can remove the relay and jumper between the hot terminal and the one going to the pumps and see if both run.
I will get a wiring diagram posted here in a bit.

PS: That is a 4 in your SN, not an r

Re: Volvo 5.0Gi starting problem

In the diagram below. Remove the fuel pump relay (#1) confirm 12V at terminal 30 of the relay socket. There should be power there even with the key off. If no power is there, check the 20A circuit breaker. If you do have power to 30, use a jumper between 30 and 87. Both pumps should run.

Re: Volvo 5.0Gi starting problem

Ok.... I do have power to 30 and when I jump to 87 both pumps run. Also there is some corrosion in these connections?

I am going to attemp to clean them...the relay side is easy...Male...but the harness side is female....a little tougher.

So does that only point to the relay?? what about the ECU??

Re: Volvo 5.0Gi starting problem

Sure, it's possible the ECU is bad, but I doubt that is your problem. You better hope not anyway, they cost $1128 from Volvo, and they are not an aftermarket part.
The pumps run, so that has already saved you 220 bucks for that low pressure pump you wanted to install.
Now, on the the next step. Get the contacts cleaned up on the relay and sockets the best you can and see if it works. Does it click when you turn the key on?
Also check socket terminal 86, it should also have power.

Ayuh,.....

As I said before,.... I'm out of My league here,......
But,......
I Believe you Should have power from the SB/ Yellow wire with the key switch in the Start position,+ Power from the Purple wire with the key in the Run position......Atleast momentarily....

Edit,..... Nevermind,..... Don is with ya here......

Good Luck....

Nope, no power to that wire. It actually does go to the ECU, but it's a ground. The ECU completes the ground, not power.

Re: Volvo 5.0Gi starting problem

IF the relay tested GOOD, try this.
Put the relay back in it's socket and leave it up about 1/8"
With a test lead, GROUND one end of the test lead and touch the other end to the blade of terminal 85 (SB/Y wire)
The pumps should come on with a good relay.
