Re: Volvo 5.0 Gxi engine/fuel pump problem??
Well, looks like i'm joining the club. My 2005 5.0 Osi -EF Volvo Penta engine (280hrs) started doing the same thing as everyone elses on this thread. Whining (sounds like a high pitched fan belt noise, but it's not), the engine will sputter and sometimes backfire. It is a intermittent problem, as when it goes "away", the boat runs fine, but when it rears it's ugly head, the engine just sputters as stated above, none to comforting on a single engine boat when I'm 10+ miles off shore. As others have stated, I tried to troubleshoot the problem and changed my 8 plugs (AC Delco41-101 IRUDIUM), cap and rotor, changed my fuel filter (even though I only had 10 hours on last one from my Winter Maint.) and STILL the problem persists.
Doing a search on YAHOO for "Volvo Fuel cell whine" results in MANY forum threads (on different web sites, and different Volvo Penta engines) on this topic. It seems obvious that there is a wide spread problem, and I don't know much about class action law suits, but it seems there's no shortage of Volvo marine engines with this problem.
My extended Warranty is valid until Spring 2012, so I plan on calling the mechanic at my Marina (Volvo certified) and starting the ball rolling. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have the Seloc Repair manual, but there's something about fuel leaks that sort of put me off for doing this repair, even though I CRINGE at the labor rates my marina charges (YES, even related to Warranty work).I guess I'm just venting.... GRRRRRRRR! -TomT
