I have a 2003 5.0 GXI-D and the fuel pump started whining and getting hot to the touch. My fuel pressure gauge was off the chart when i checked it on the fuel rail. Hooked up a seprate fuel tank and had the same problem. Checked the low pressure side and had 6psi of pressure. Took out the pressure regulator and cleaned the screen and reinstalled it. After cleaning the screen i hooked up the gauge and got a steady 50psi. Took the boat out for an hour and half of running and was fine, on the way back to the harbor the pump started whining again. Cleaned the screen again went back out and when i opened up the throttel the fuel pressure droped from 50psi to 30psi. The boat was also back firing or something like that (a loud knock from the engine). I want to get opions of what i should do because i am about to buy a new fuel moduel and a pressure regulator and get the fuel line, rail and injectors cleaned.

Re: volvo 5.0 gxi-d fuel pump

I am actually having the same issue on my end. I have a 2002 Chapparal 216 ssi, my pump just started making a winding noise and starts to back fire and jerks up and down on throttle. Have you been able to figure anything out? There are 2 options in replacing the pumps, you can replace the whole fuel cell unit or just one of the pumps which are replacable. I am not sure what actually needs to be replaced? It seems that this issue is extremely common and everyone replaces the whole unit, but is this necessary or can i just change the smaller pump? Any advice would be nice.

Re: volvo 5.0 gxi-d fuel pump

I have had many small problems with my fuel injection, the first was a air lock in the fuel rail and i bought a $50.00 fuel pressure gauge to fix it. Then my fuel pressure from the high pressure pump taken at the rail was high and eractic so i took the pressure regulator off and cleaned the screen which worked and brought my fuel pressure down to 48 psi and steady. My low pressure pump was reading fine at 6 psi. I took the boat out and it ran fine but the fuel pumped still wined at low rpm's, but not as loud as before plus it was not getting hot to the touch. I took the boat out again and my throttle was not responsive at all which is what i posted. I wanted to go out for the fourth so i looked at everything fuel related starting at the anti syphon valve on the top of the fuel tank. Took it apart and found plastic in it and i dug it out with a small screwdriver also sprayed carb cleaner in it and blew it out with a air hose. I blew air back and forth and got more peices out, put it back together and it ran fine. I've had it out twice with no problem so far and the fuel pump still whines a little bit. I am going to hold off on getting a new fuel pump assemblie and cleaning the injectors until she gives me more problems.
