I recently purchased a 2006 Regal with a 5.0 GXi SX Outdrive - 225 hours. Records were up to date and recently serviced. During the test drive I noted a slight whine apparently from the engine compartment. Sounded out of place but having never been around the 5.0 GXi wasn't sure it was unusual. Boat owner had "never noticed it".
Now that I have the boat the whine is highly irritating and periodic. It does it about 75% of the time and when it doesn't the boat sounds much better - the whine sort of slowly fades out when it isn't happening. I wish I could describe the whine - low frequency high pitch - sounds almost like a belt caused whine.
The only symptom I have other than the whine is at in gear low RPM (1,200 to 1,400) crusing about every 5 minutes the whine will quickly go away (within 2 or 3 seconds) and the boat will loose power, RPM drop and seems close to stall. This lasts about 5 seconds then it comes back to life and continues on with the whine. No issues at higher non-plane or plane RPM - no issues at WOT (yet)
Based on what I am reading here I would guess fuel pump. I am going to swap out the fuel filter and drop in water remover to the fuel system as a start. I will also try and identify the exact location of the whine.
Anyone have any thoughts? Experience with this?
Most I have seen with the fuel pump have issues at higher RPM when the fuel is needed.
Thanks!
