Volvo 5.0 ford sparkplugs

I have a 1995 volvo 5.0 ford motor, it is an FL. The exhaust manifold i very close to the sparkplugs. Is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold to change the sparkplugs on this motor?

Modify your plug socket to look like the one in the diagram.

and cross your fingers and clinch your teeth.
some of the 5.0 ford motors were all but imposible to access #8.
creative cursing sometimes relives the stress though

Excellent illustration RP! How'd ya do it?

I used to use the box end of a combination wrench. It fit in quite easily.

When I updated my engine (2001 Ford Explorer 5.0) It has the Ford GT40P cylinder heads, They rotated the plugs down and more straight out. Now they are super easy to get a socket on. Sorry, that doesn't do ya much good though.

Also Sears carries a line of plug wrenches with added attachments...I found them very helpful also. 6.00-$10.00.

In time they worked but it wasn't easy.

Thanks for the replies, I will shop for the thinnest plug socket, buy a couple, and work on thinning them down.
