Hello All,

Im trying to find the correct oil for my motor. The stuff that the manual recomends is a SAE 30 Heavy Duty sinthetic. I cant find the stuff that it recomends something called DuraPlus??

Also im trying to change the Drive lube as well, its a sx cobra drive. That proves to be another hard one for me to find.

Any ideas on substitutions??

Thanks

CB

Castrol makes a synthetic 20W50 which is what Volvo called for in terms of weight in later years and is a near perfect substitution for the Volvo oil. You can find it at walmart for about $4.70 a quart, that it what I use and it is fine

I think Don S read your post wrong. DuraPlus is Volvo's 30W synthetic oil and is only available from Volvo Dealers or Volvo Service Dealers. It has a brown and white label. You can order it but it's hard to find it on a shelf...

Re: Volvo 4.3GL Maintenence issues

Well the year of my motor is 1997. And the complete Model of my motor is
4.3GL PLKD

then the number directly underneath the model is- 4110147305

And the Transom Assy. Is a TSK SX-C1 (Gas)

and the Drive unit is a - SX-C1 1.85

So correct me if im wrong...... Im understanding that you guys are telling me that any Motor oil will be fine for my motor???

What about the drive lube?? what should i use for that???

Thanks for the advice!!

Well, I did miss read your original post. Somehow I took out of it that you wanted to put 30W oil in your drive. That was fine in the older 290 style single prop drives, That was the recommended oil.
Sticking with the drives here for a minute, you should use a GL-5 Synthetic gear lube.
The GL-5 is a general spec, not a Volvo speck. ANY the GL in the GL5 spec stand for Gear Lube, 5 is the grade and weight. Then of course it is synthetic, and there is GL5 in syntentic and mineral oils. USe any brand name you want, just make sure it meets the GL5 Synthetic spec.

Engine oil. If you don't want to use Volvo's specific no problem. Use what ever you want. I used Delo 400 30W exclusively in many of my own and my customers boats. We also let them choose what they wanted. We were a Merc and Volvo dealer and had all types of oil. Fact is, we never lost an engine over the type oil used. Especially if it was changed yearly, with a new filter. Lots of things out there in a boat that will kill an engine, the type oil in it isn't one of them.

We have nearly the same engine. FWIW, I used the DuraLube the first time I changed my oil but it's such a pain to get it, I use Valvoline 30W now. Like Don said, any 30W oil will do fine - pick your favorite.

BTW, I don't know what you have for manuals, but I have a full set of LK manuals (except of course the sterndrives manual), and while I would highly recommend your order factory manuals if you don't have them, if you need anything out of them in the meantime you can PM me...
