Volvo 4.3 GL won't turn over

Had boat out two weeks ago and ran fine. Charged battery up and tried to start. When I turn the key I get power to the gauges and everything. I hear a humming noise but no starter turnover. Could it be the starter? Where can I find a link to Volvo 4.3 GL manuals?

If you can get a remote starter button, you connect one wire to the battery post on the starter and the other wire to the "S" post. Then depress the button.
The other method is to use a screw driver and place it parallel to the battery post and the "S" post on the starter. In either case the starter should turn the engine, if not, then the starter needs to come out. Usually the solenoid starter goes out and has to be replaced. Please note that you need "Marine" type parts not "automotive" parts for that starter.

It is a '98. I don't see any other letters for the motor other than GL.

Thanks!
I got a remote start switch and hooked it up and the starter turned over no problems. Where is the starter solenoid located. Should I just replace it or is it something that can be repaired? Do you have any link to online manuals for the Volvo 4.3GL?

What was "Humming" when you turn the key? Was it the fuel pump running?

Ayuh,.......

The terminals you hooked the Remote Starter Switch too,....??........

That Is the Starter Solenoid........
So,.... I guess it doesn't Need Fixing, or replacing......
After All,... It Worked when you put power to it.....

Before I were to Replace Anything,.......
I'd remove, Sand, Clean,+ Reattach, ALL of the Battery's,+ Starter's wiring......
Including the Grounds(-)......
Or,.....
You can just start Throwing Parts at it, til you actually find the Problem.....

I've never seen any Links to Manuals for your Volvo,.... Sorry.....

In case you are wondering why I asked such an odd question, your setup has a slave start solenoid, and it also is what operates the fuel pump when you trying to start the engine. If the relay was bad, you wouldn't get power to the fuel pump either. But if the fuel pump is running when you turn the key to start but the starter doesn't turn, that would suggest to me that the relay is OK but the wiring going from the relay to the starter is faulty since you no that jumping the starter will make the starter operate.

Re: Volvo 4.3 GL won't turn over

I am going to assume that our engines are very similar other than our carbs. The first thing I would check (after cleaning all the connections to the starter as Bond-o suggested) is the breakers. There are 2 on the front of your starboard riser (where you read the engine info) and there is a not-so-obvious one on the right side of the fuel pump about halfway down (facing port). Check them for continuity with a DVM (you'll have to unscrew them to do this). Sometime they fail and do not "pop". The one on the fuel pump supplies the power to the relay. The relay is under the fuel pump bracket, behind the pump. It is hard to get to and is mounted on a plastic "shock absorber" type frame. That frame also makes it hard to pull the relay. There is one screw on either end of that frame. If you take those two screws out and take the two small screws out of the breaker (on either side of the red button) you'll be able to pull the relay and it's harness and the breaker out in the open a bit to check them out. You'll notice the same color wires going to the relay as to your starter solenoid...
