OK i have found a flywheel housing for my old 280 drive volvo to fit a 14 inch flywheel. the question is on this 350 87ish 5.7l block the stater holes only accomodate the offset bolt pattern. does this flywheel need to be internally or externally balanced? if need be I can go get the block casting numbers. i have another thread on this issue for some reference.

question # 2 is will the drive coupler off the smaller flywheel bolt up to the new 14 inch flywheel
volvo 280 drive no trim just tilt

is the other thread i started ahile back.

Re: volvo 350 flywheel question

as far as i know all 350 motors with a 1 piece rear main seal are externaly ballanced. any good machine shop should be able to drill and tap the block for the straight across bolt pattern starter

Ayuh,....

The staggered bolt pattern in the block determines that you need a 14" Flywheel.....
And only the SBC 400cid. crankshaft uses the Externally balanced flywheel....
So,...
Your 350 needs an Internally, aka. Neutral balanced, 14" Flywheel....

And,....
I Think the drillings for the Couplers used on boats, are the Same pattern as an 11" Clutch on a 14" flywheel....

Re: volvo 350 flywheel question

The 305 I pulled from my 86 Thompson was externally balanced on the flywheel. It was a one piece rear main. The balancer was a neutral balance though. You really need to have the casting number on the crank to be sure. Some of the later model engines (86-up) had an externally balanced crank.
