Volvo 3.0L overheating

I have a 2006 Glasstron with a 3.0l Volvo. Last year the boat stayed on the lift most of the summer and didn't get run for almost 2 months. I was out bailing out my sail boat and decided to start it up and let it run a bit so I made sure the lower unit was in the water and started it up and let it run at about 1200 RPM while I worked on the other boat. I little later the alarm went off so I shut it down and determined that it had over heated, I let it cool down and took it off the lift and took it for a ride and it over heated again, so after drifting for a while I took it back in and trailered it, winterized it and put it away for the winter. It's over at a friends house now and he is looking into the problem for me but he discovered that it doesn't have an impeller in the lower unit like his older boat does, we've figured out that it has the raw water pump on front and we think it has a thermostat.

What we need to know is... does it have a thermostat (in the heat exchanger we assume)? would that be the first thing to check or is it more likely the raw water pump? Is there any easy way to trouble shoot this and narrow it down? the full engine model is 3.0l GLP-D

Thanks

IF the boat wasn't all the way in the water, it probably sucked air because the intakes on the drive were not all completely under water. At that point, with no water the impeller fries. Did you check the raw water pump impeller? it's the belt driven pump on the front of the engine with the 2 big hoses going to it.

Re: Volvo 3.0L overheating

I'm about as sure as I can be that the intakes were submerged but I still think it could be that pump. Also, he put the muffs on it and ran it and the temp started climbing towards 200 and he shut it down, that confuses us because it seems if water is being forced in either by the hose or by being forced through when moving through the water, wouldn't that force the water through the pump?

Does anyone have any idea how to tell witch impeller kit this would use? I see two different ones listed: 3593660 and 21213664

No way in 'ell can you force water through the engine without that pump.

If you need the part number, just above your original post, click on Volvo Penta Parts. Follow the links to your engine and pump. The OEM numbers are there

The 21213664 number is the newest number. That is the one you need to order.
