Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

I have a 2002 3.0 liter SX that I would like to check the timing on as part of a standard tune up. I have searched the forum and found instructions on how to set timing on a 3.0 GL/GS model, are they the same?

I have the diagram for making the jumper to disable the timing advance, but have seen conflicting advice on when to connect the B+ source, is this done before or after the engine has started?

Thanks for your help

Re: Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

Thanks Bond-o, this is a busy forum (big surprise for this time of year!)

I am 90% sure of what I need to do, I just need a confirmation from someone who has more knowledge than I do on this....

What's the full model number, year doesn't mean much.

Re: Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

For GL-A,B, and C
C&P from manual

Setting Timing
The timing procedure for Delco EST system requires
shunting (shutting off) the electronic spark advance.
Follow the steps that apply to your specific model.
1. Install Timing Test Lead, Volvo Penta P/N
885163-6 A, into distributor and connect bare
lead to a 12-volt engine B+ source. Start engine.
2. Direct beam of timing light onto timing grid.
Loosen distributor clamp, then turn distributor
slowly by hand until timing mark is set at the
appropriate timing figure. See Ignition Timing
Advance on page 64. Recheck timing mark;
reset if necessary. Tighten clamp bolt.
3. Stop engine. Remove adaptor plug.

Re: Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

Thanks Don, I don't have the engine model in front of me - I need to check when I get home tonight.

The main reason I ask is I have found a service bulletin that drives home the point of not connecting the B+ until after the engine is started.

I appreciated your help!

What's the full model number, not just GL or GS
A Volvo serial number would be better

Re: Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

The procedure for YOUR engine is what I posted before. That bulletin you found is for older models (93-98).

Re: Volvo 3.0 timing procedure

Don S ... Thank you so much for your response on the engine timimg procedure. I had a problem with my distributer seizing and had to replace it. I could not find the correct information and the test module number ANYWHERE !!! I will now order the test module and time my boat properly!!! (In the meantime, I had set it by ear and it is running well...Lucky I guess !)
