Hi there fellow boaters!

1 week ago i just arrived from my summer vacation on the sea; all went well except one thing: MY STARTER SCREW (the long one - starter with straight across pattern) BROKE OFF! I just installed a new starter before i went to the vacation, but i didn't get new screws with the starter so i put the old ones in. Now i have a big problem - the screw broke off inside the block. HOW THE HELL CAN I GET IT OUT? Thanx in advance!

The motor is a 2004 Volvo Penta 3.0

Re: Volvo 3.0 starter screw

Usually when those screws break off due to loose bolts or that bracket that holds the back of the starter to the block, the screws come out fairly easily. Depending on access, usually drilling a small hole and using any small "Easyout" will work. Even a left handed drill bit will usually back them out fairly easily.
But if you can't get to it, pulling the engine is the only way to get the job done.
If there is a lot of corrosion, heat may be necessary.

Re: Volvo 3.0 starter screw

Hi Don!

Thanx for the quick reply! The starter is a mini HI-torque one - the bracket wasn't provided so i didn't put it in. Should i make one out of stainless steel when i reinstall those screws? There isn't any corrosion, i put grease on those screws when i installed them so they should come out easily. Access will be a problem, cause i think i won't get a driller inside the bilge to drill the hole :( Pulling the engine? Any other tricks?

Well, there is always drilling a big hole thru the bottom of the boat so you can see the bolt straight on :% :% :%

Do you have the full model number or the serial number of your engine handy? You should have a bracket like item 5 below.

Oh just remembered: the old starter had a bracket, but it wasn't a mini hi-torque one like i bought so the bracket on it didn't fit.

The serial number is about 12 numbers long. Volvo, or Merc for that mater doesn't go by year anymore, so finding the proper model and serial number of your engine is going to be very handy.
Read this.
Volvo Engine ID service bulletin

Also, all the starters are hi torque starters anymore. None have used regular starters for years. Does that "Less Expensive" Arco starter even have a long stud to mount the bracket to?
