With the allens screws out, you can thread two 1/4-20 bolts into the smaller threaded holes next to the allen screw holes. When you thread the 1/4-20 bolts in, they bottom out and then begin to force the stainless piece up.

Dave

If you don't mind my asking, what in the H--L are you reading? Assuming (kind of obvious really) you are not using a Volvo manual, just use one of the screws off the back cover of the drive and put it in one of those small holes and screw it in. The pivot bushing (that round thing with the 4 holes in it) has two threaded holes (1/4-20 to be exact) in them. The screw will bottom out against the upper gear box and lift the pivot bushing

Don S.

The aftermarket manuals show at least 3 ways the bushing maybe held in.Quite some time ago I serviced one that had a single, large allen bolt down thru it.Certainly NOT a 290sp,But I know why there is confusion.Kinda like the Mercruiser V8, (no idea what year) but the part book shows 3 cooling systems. All different thermostat housings.

DHP

DHP there are 2 sizes of the single screw style, but he was talking about the double screw type with the 4 holes in it. Obviously the people at clymers don't know about those holes being threaded either. Just another reason I don't like Clymer manuals.....they are right up there with Champion spark plugs in my book. They cost money, but give little in return.

the clymer manual is right. you use the 2 bent rods to "rock" the pivot out. try twisting it at the same time. chances are if it hasnt been out in a while it wont be easy.
it seems you are unlucky enough to not have the model with the threaded holes for easier removal.

Re: volvo 290sp ....helmut removal

just thought i would jump in here. had the same problem with my friends duo-prop 290DP unit. if i remember correctly the large pin is supposed to be pushed out by running down two screws if the holes are threaded. did not work. we were able to remove the helmet by prying it over the dowl, did not damage any parts. manuals are wonderful things, have used douglas, boeing, lockheed, convair books for years but they are ALL written assuming everything works. sometimes you have to grab the bull by the horns and thke thing apart however you can. regards fred

a little more bit of info as i do not know how far you are. we first removed the 2 large allen head ( metric) shoulder bolts for the horizontal pivot. us a thin open end wrench to remove the large locking nuts on each bolt. the bolts are still threaded into the helmet so use a large metric allen wrench and screw the bolts out. now you should have enough clearance to work the helmet over the dowel that is holding you up. hope this helps, it worked for us fred
