Friend cant keep the lock down from being twisted and mangled. My question is, Does the lock down engage only when the unit is in reverse to keep the prop from climbing? If so, what allows the drive to release if it hits an object while going forward? My thinking is that there is a relief valve in the trim system like an O/B. thanks FRED

The lockdown mechanism is released when in forward. There are no relief valves in the 290's trim cylinders.

Re: volvo 290DP reverse lockdown

Thanks for the response guys. I am trying to come up with some last ditch efforts to keep my friend from walking away from the boat and throwing in the towel. Outdrive was new out of the box from VOLVO and has maby 4 hrs. on it. New 350 engine has maby 2 hrs. Due to neglect the drive looks like it has been around 10 yrs, salt does a job. Engine has a rattle that seems to be centered in the thermostat housing?? He is convinced the bearing or bearings in the bell housing are bad but there is no thumping when the engine is running and the outdrive removed. No side play in the shaft. FRED

Here is a link to the OEM service manual for that drive. If you look at page 137, you can see how the lockdown mechanism should be adjusted.

If the lockdown is not properly adjusted, or binding because of corrosion and sea life, it can get damaged by kicking up in reverse, and slamming back down.
