HI, I have a boat with Volvo duoprops and the AD41B diesels, my steering fork bearings are shot, as well as the seals on the trim tilt rams. Of course the mounting hole was too small, so I will have to remove the transom shields to get at everything, just curious as to how to remove. Looks like six nuts hold the transom shield to the hull, and the engine must be disconnected from the transom shield to come off...Am I headed in the right direction here? Found a local place that can rebuild the cylinders at $50 each. Comments? Thanks!

Remove the outdrive and the bellows. There is a ring held in with 6 bolts that has to come loose to get the engine out.
Remove the engine.
Remove the exhaust tube attached to the transom shield. Disconnect the trim hoses.
Disconnect the steering.
Remove the shift cable.
Then remove the bolts holding the transom shield in.
You will need the big oring gasket for the transom shield when you reinstall. It's actually has a round cross section.

Hey Don, thanks for the info...however I have a pair of inline 6 cylinder diesels here...when you say remove them, can't I just remove the transom shield from the back of the boat, leaving the engines in place? Or is it next to impossible to do it this way due to the turbos, exhaust tubes, etc. Perhaps I can just lift them and move them forward a couple of feet. Thanks, KPB

I am VERY familiar with the 41's. I don't know how much room you have in front or to the side, and yes you may be able to move them enough to get to the exhaust tube and lower bolts. But if you have to move them to the side, why not just get them out of the way so you don't have to work on the rest of it with the engine ready to fall on you. They aren't light ya know.
Taking them apart is one thing. Putting it all back together takes a little more care.

Thanks Don,
Makes perfect sense...I do have about 2 feet in fron of the engines to move them forward, so that should work OK...and they are in great shape. Too bad the holes in the transom weren't made large enough for me to access the steering fork upper bolts and remove them. There is NO clearance there. As for the rams, friend has the $100 Volvo tool that I can borrow to pop them out, but may as well do it when the motor and transom shields are out. Thanks again, KPB
