Have a good friend who is having problems with the trim- tilt unit on his 1988 Skipjack. The unit is a Volvo 290. The unit works sporadically, but seems to be getting worse. It seems to work when he takes off, but when he's coming in to dock after a days trolling the unit will not come up. Any ideas out there ? Thanx in advance.........Bill

Re: volvo 290 tilt problem

Need some additional info. Is there any clicking of the relays? Does the trim pump try to work? IS it running and nothing is happening?

He says he replaced the solenoid,
290's don't have solenoids. but if he has relays that are clicking, check for power to the relay. Not just where it clicks, check the #30 terminal for power.
What engine is this on?
Did you check the power to the trim pump?

Re: volvo 290 tilt problem

Trim/Tilt problems on the VP 290 seem to be prevalent in the 80's vintage installations and are frustrating to diagnose.

My '87 AQ271A/AQ290DP originally had the 2 solenoid setup as retired butcher described. The old style has 3 wires to the pump motor. The newer units have only 2 wires which use a pair of relays to reverse polarity to the pump. You have to methodically go through the connections to ensure everything is getting the right voltage. One of the flakiest components in the whole system seems to be the trim/tilt switch in the engine control handle. Then the other thing to check is that you're using the "beach override" switch to raise the drive. Amazing how many people forget this one.

If your set up has relays check to make sure they're not automotive headlight relays. They won't handle the current passed to the pump when it starts up. They may work for a while but will eventually burn out.

I bought the sierra replacement kit. It's Plug & Play directly into the existing wiring harnass. Probably took all of 15 minutes to install. Haven't had a problem since.

Kinda forgot about that pump/solenoid setup. They only used it for a couple of years and then changed to relays only.
Bill, will the pump run when pushing the down button?
