I have a Volvo 280 with a Duo prop lower. I took it out the other day and I noticed a slight grinding, but only in gear. So im thinking lower drive.

I pull the boat out and crank it. No noise from the lower drive.

Im also having a problem pin pointing the noise, I cannot determine if it coming from around the intermediate bearing or the front of the motor.

Ive notice no effect on performance.

I had the intermediate bearing, shaft, bellows changed a year ago. There is no water in the drive.

Any advice on what it might be.

Engine is a 5.7

Re: Volvo 280 slight grinding noise

Update on grinding.

I got a better earfull this time.

It actually grinds out of gear also, it just sounds louder in gear. It also get alot louder when turning the wheel. So Im thinking water in Bellow.

I just had the intermediate bearings, drive joints and bellow replaced last year by a Mechanic. It looks like Ill pull the bellow off this weekend and check for water.

Any suggestions on what to do if I do find water in the bellow?

Thanks Eric

Problem found.

Water in Bellow.

Mech never tightened the bellow clamp after installing new Intermediate shaft, bearings, bellow and UV drive shaft last year.
