I am trying to replace the oil my 1995 volvo 280 outdrive. I have completley drained the oil and am trying to put the correct amount of oil back into it. I tried loosening the dipstick and and it is completley stripped so I looked in the manual and it says 2.5 quarts but I want to make sure, does anyone know how many quarts this thing takes? It just seems that 2.5 quarts is a lot. It would be nice if it was as easy as the mercruiser.

it is just as easy as a mercruser. you simply fill it from the bottom until the correct level is on the dipstick.
when you say its stripped is it the dipstick head or the actual threads?

Are you sure it's a 280? They stopped using that drive in the early 80's. That said, the 280/290 style of drive (single prop) usually takes between 2.5 to almost 3 quarts. DO NOT overfill, or you will blow the oil into your bellows.
You also need to fix the dipstick threads, or it will leak water into the drive if the threads are stripped out.

It should be a volvo 280 dp and the threads aren't stripped it is the part where the screwdriver goes. To fill it up it says remove the bolt behind the cover and pour in. It says nothing about filling from the bottom.

If its a 280, well, right behind the "280" cover is the fill screw. Holds around 2.8 qts. Replace with new seal. And ya better have a water tight seal at the dipstick, like Don said..

sometimes a punch works well to knock out the upper plug, this would also be the time to replace it.
why volvo makes crazy reccomendations for filling is beyond me, I can show you about 4 ways to do it and end up with the same results, some are just harder than others, easiest way for a newbie is simply fill from the bottom with a pump and quart bottles until the level is correct on the stick.
this aint rocket science its simply maint.
if you know the aproximate, key word approximate, capacity is then you simply monitor how much you put in VS what the approximate capacity is.
as long as you at the correct level on the stck and used within a few ounces one way or the other odds are high you got it right.
its a heckuva lot easier than the tilt up and remove the rear cover method.
