My old houseboat was repowered with a AQ200C with a 280 outdrive. The book that I have says to use 10w-40 oil as the lower unit lube.My thinking says #80-90 gear lube?Is there a specific reason Volvo uses motor oil and would it hurt to use marine gear lube???

Don't go by your thinking, Actually, a standard 30Wt single grade motor oil is better than the 10W-40 (old Volvo service bulletin)
DO NOT use 80-90 gear lube.

Thanks Don. I have been using straight 30 wt. and a fella at a wholesale marine depot nearby suggested 90#would be better.I will follow the manual and your advice, and I believe the man was just trying to sell me his oil!!

Re: volvo 280 lube

When people think gear lube they think 80-90. Some people make that mistake and put it in their Volvo legs. Wrong move.
